It KILLS ME that I always have to stress the point of using heavier weights to a large majority of women….

It usually is directed at women that work hard, are dedicated but have a stigma with using heavy weight.

Quite often before my I teach some of my fitness classes I get questions. A common question I hear is, “I lost the first “x” amount of pounds and I need to lose 5 more, what do I do?” As I look down, they are usually holding set of 3lb. or 5lb. weights.

First thing I do is smile, look at them and kindly tell them to grab heavier weights.

With hesitation, they do…Probably because they don’t want me busting their chops.

Usually 2-3 weeks later I see them and they can’t thank me enough! “Thank you so much, ever since I started grabbing heavier weights, I feel stronger, more toned and fit.”

Going for a burn especially in a class with a tiny weight will not do much but waste your time. I’m sorry but when I see someone doing a row with a 2.5 lb weight, I think to myself, “Do they think they are making something happen or change by doing that?”

The fact is the big lat muscles of the back along with the shoulders are hardly being activated with that small weight. The arms, which are the smaller muscles might get a small amount of work. Yes, they may burn- especially after 40 -50 reps or holding a contracted position for a long amount of time, but it isn’t doing much to over load or strengthen the muscles of the body to produce a change.

And change is what we are after….isn’t it?
